BDSRA statement of support for Will’s Law (SB 710)

The Batten Disease Support and Research Association would like to express its support for Will’s Law (SB 710) and advocate for its passage by the Missouri legislature.

Passing this bill would ensure that all students living with epilepsy and seizure disorders throughout the state of Missouri are supported with the proper resources, care, and safety they need in their school environment. Individualized health care plans on file and requirements for all school personnel to be trained every two years to care for students with epilepsy and seizure disorders are included in this legislation.

Epilepsy is one of the main symptoms of Batten disease when combined with dementia, motor deterioration, or visual loss. Advocacy is a crucial pillar of BDSRA’s mission as legislative actions are integral for positive changes that can improve lives in the Batten community and everyone affected by rare diseases.

BDSRA encourages Missouri to become the 15th state to pass a Seizure Safe School bill, joining Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington.

In addition, BDSRA offers the Batten community our premiere school resource, the “Teach and Be Taught” manual and DVD series, which helps in educating members of the child’s education team such as family, teachers, principals, therapists, aides, bus drivers, other students, and members of the child’s school and community network. This resource offers specific recommendations and suggestions for making a variety of accommodations in the school setting.
